Construction Engineer

Report to the Lead Engineer, the Construction Engineer will be responsible for designing & detailing various elements (e.g., Joinery, Interior and Bulkhead Installations, etc), serving several production lines producing both sailing and power-driven catamarans within specific time frames.


KEY JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Design functions include (but not limited to) Joinery, joinery assemblies and yacht assembly details. Ensuring that that designs meet structural and functional requirements, that designs are within cost and weight parameters and suitable for manufacture.
  • Design aspects include (but are not limited to) tooling design, jig design, manufacturing process design, BOM creation and BOM management with associated custom part design (including but not limited to custom stainless-steel components and other hardware).
  • Create CAD Models (2D & 3D) & complete calculations for the design and specification of components for new product design or engineering change requests (ECR).
  • Planning and creation of manufacturing and installation drawings for joinery components & assembles, interior components and installations (such as interior GRP components and structural components).
  • Collaboration of designs with other design areas/teams.
  • Communication of relevant information regarding the rolling out of new designs to the various departments (including feedback to the Project Manager) to ensure successful implementation.
  • On-site implementation of new product design and design changes (ECR) as well as thorough testing and quality checks.
  • Applicant will be responsible for investigating new techniques/products to improve both the design and manufacturing process.
  • Introducing design changes through the change management processe
  • Assisting with the prototype builds on new projects.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum: National Diploma (NQF Level 6) Engineering, Industrial Design or related field.
  • Ideal:  BTech/B-degree (NQF Level 7) Engineering or related field.
  • Experience: 3 years design experience in the composite boat building or engineering industry.
  • Thorough understanding of design for manufacturing and build sequence.
  • Practical understanding of Joinery construction.
  • Thorough understanding of tooling design, linked with relevant manufacturing processes.
  • Good working knowledge of Solidworks (2013 upwards), and a Basic knowledge of AutoCAD / Draftsight (2010 upwards). Speed / Accuracy tests to be conducted in both programs.
  • Working knowledge of MS Office package (especially Excel).
  • Boat Building experience preferred.

  • An interest in boating and boat building is advantageous to this role as the position will include practical product development, sea trials, and facilitating manufacturing.
  • Decision making, problem solving and deadline driven
  • Sailing experience will be advantageous.
  • Experience with Syspro will be advantageous
